New websites within the UN system

  • e-Subscription of Latest UN Documents
    Using web feeds (RSS) in your browser (Internet Explorer) http://undocs.org/
    The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) is pleased to announce the next step in our shift from printed to electronic documents with the introduction of an e-subscription programme based on RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a web feed technology which is used to channel United Nations documents. In simple words, RSS gathers all the documents you have subscribed to, in one place, as soon as they are published. By subscribing to RSS, the system will provide the latest documents to you according to your subscription criteria. Once you receive the list of documents, all you have to do is to click on the document of interest.

    The official logo and slogan (“Our Year. Our Voice”) for the International Year of Youth are now available. 
  • The Millennium Development Goals Report 2010

    The report notes that even though the economic crisis took a heavy toll on jobs and incomes around the world, the world is still on track to achieve the MDG target of cutting the rate of extreme poverty in half by 2015.

    ‘Greening the Blue,’ a new website, shows what is happening to make the UN more sustainable and provides advice to Staff Members of UN System offices, agencies and organizations how they can contribute. It includes the greenhouse gas inventories of 49 UN organizations, as well as detailed tips and tools for staff in how to reduce their personal carbon footprints.

    The new website provides information about the internal justice system at the UN including the Office of Staff Legal Assistance, the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal. All judgments rendered by the Tribunals are available for download on the website.

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched on 17 June 2010 an extensive assessment of what must be done to advance sustainable development and reduce global poverty. The report identifies a concrete action agenda to inform the outcome of the World leaders’ MDG Summit in New York, this September.

    The World Bank Group will offer free access to more than 2,000 financial, business, health, economic and human development statistics that had mostly been available only to paying subscribers.

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a major online drive to spur action to eliminate hunger and highlight the fact that one in six people worldwide go hungry everyday. Through the “1billionhungry project” people can voice their outrage about world hunger by adding their names to an online petition.

    This is a new platform launched by the United Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).Bringing together existing and cumulative experience, know-how and resources from around the world, it aims to support practitioners in effective design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes.

    This is UNDP’s forward-looking review of the factors that shape MDG progress, along with the constraints and bottlenecks that have hampered MDG achievement in many countries. The findings build on MDG assessments in 30 countries that were undertaken for this review. The report shows that while there has been notable progress on many targets and indicators across countries, it is clear that much more needs to be done for MDG achievements to be realized by 2015.

    Sales of electronic products in countries like China and India and across continents such as Africa and Latin America are set to rise sharply in the next 10 years.   • UN Chronicle – redesigned website http://www.un.org/chronicle
    The website was launched in beta on 4 December 2009. In the coming months the website's functionality will be improved and more languages added. The “UN Chronicle” is a quarterly magazine published by the United Nations Department of Public Information and available worldwide through subscription. This website currently contains articles from the print magazine from 2007 to 2009.   • Memorial website with condolence book honouring UN family members lost in the earthquake in Haiti

    On 12 January 2010 at 4:53 PM, an earthquake of a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale shook the earth under Haiti, leaving death, destruction and suffering in its wake. The UN's memorial website remembers those members of the UN family who lost their lives in the earthquake and lists those confirmed to have died. Visitors to the site can leave a message in the online condolence book.

    The United Nations has launched its first publication on the State of the World’s Indigenous People. The report notes that the world’s 370 million indigenous peoples suffer from disproportionately, often exponentially, higher rates of poverty, health problems, crime and human rights abuses; stressing that self-determination and land rights are vital for their survival.

    This new gateway will allow companies, willing to contribute to the UN, to browse through a catalogue of humanitarian needs (including relief-for-Haiti appeals) and partnership opportunities, or simply to submit ideas for collaboration. Based on shared interests, the site flags potential matches to be connected directly. At the same time, business.un.org offers UN agencies interested in private-sector support the opportunity to identify and describe needs and preferences, covering nearly all operations of the Organization, from humanitarian relief to poverty reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention.

    The re-designed website of this campaign will be launched during October, as part of the lead-up to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November). 
  • “Say NO – UNiTE” - Platform for Action (UNIFEM)
    UNIFEM will launch this new platform for action on 6 November. It will provide an opportunity for activists, NGOs and others to showcase actions to end violence against women on the ground by creating a profile and uploading information at www.saynotoviolence.org  
  • New Websites launched for United Nations Meetings Coverage and Press Releases

    The new sites offer a simplified user-friendly design that differentiates product by type (meetings coverage, press releases, press conferences, and briefings of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General). The websites also offer the possibility of retrieving information as it relates to the main organs of the United Nations, and headlines are now more legible, noting a highlight of the content of the document. The sites have links to various news- and media-related websites at UN Headquarters and overseas Offices.

    This new UN report on women in Afghanistan, describes the extensive and increasing level of violence directed at women taking part in public life, as well as the “widespread occurrence” of rape against a backdrop of institutional failure and impunity. The 32-page report notes that “violence, in the public and private spheres, is an everyday occurrence in the lives of a huge proportion of Afghan women.”

    From discarded fishing gear to plastic bags to cigarette butts, a growing tide of marine litter is harming oceans and beaches worldwide, says a new report.     The International Criminal Court (ICC) has developed a new set of Legal Tools for researching international criminal law and cases. The Legal Tools are essentially an electronic library of 40,000 searchable documents available to the general public.

    The redesigned UN website has been launched on 4 May 2009 in the 6 UN languages with a new structure, improved navigation and usability, and greater coherence. The site introduces a new branding concept and embodies the Organization’s priorities on multilingualism and web accessibility. The five thematic pages are colour-coded and serve as gateways to information on those themes.

  • World Digital Library
    On 21 April 2009 the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and 32 partner institutions launched the World Digital Library, a website that features unique cultural materials from libraries and archives from around the world.
    The site - located at www.wdl.org - includes manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, prints and photographs. It provides unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material.
